Meticulously Restored Rudolph Schindler-Designed Midcentury Modern Home With Iconic Butterfly Roof Lists in L.A. for $7 Million

A recently renovated midcentury residence originally designed by architect Rudolph Schindler featuring his iconic butterfly roof has just hit the market for $6,995,000 in Los Angeles.

Built in 1946, the four-bedroom home now boasts a modernized 3,549-square-foot interior with standout details, including Douglas fir walls, four fireplaces, and a glass-encased office.

“It was a real labor of love for the sellers, as they owned a Schindler home prior to this one,” says listing agent Cooper Mount of Carolwood Estates. “They saw this one, fell it love with it, and decided to undertake a major, very precise restoration.”

Known as the Kallis-Sharlin Residence as it was originally built for artist and film art director Mischa Kallis, the landmark property still features Schindler’s signature touches with unconventional angles, an abundance of natural light, and a sense of flow between spaces.

“The architecture is striking and it has very L.A. views that overlook the [San Fernando] Valley and Universal Studios,” Mount added. “It is one of the more interesting homes the way it unfolds with its butterfly shape.”

The five-year restoration project in collaboration with architects Barbara Bestor and Jeff Fink was designed to preserve the home’s historic integrity while adding some modern touches.

“It became a much bigger project than they anticipated,” he notes. “The sellers are very much purists but wanted to bring the home up to today’s standards.”

The residence has been designated “Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #860,” according to the listing.

Offering expansive hillside views overlooking the valley, the structure was designed to follow the natural contours of the land while offering an abundance of glass walls to connect the interior with the surrounding landscape.

“It has amazing views from every room,” he says. “It is located in the Hollywood Hills and you can see the fireworks at Universal Studios, which is incredible.”

Other highlights found in the home are a great room with built-in bookcases and floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace, a retro kitchen with custom cabinetry and built-in booth seating, and a lavish primary suite surrounded by city views with steam shower and a mahogany soaking tub.

A private patio out back is surrounded by lush landscaping. There is also a carport, a private bocce court for entertaining, and an in-ground pool with spa.

“We have shown it to people who truly appreciate architecture and midcentury purist homes,” Mount says. “It is mostly art and house collectors who are fans of this genre of home.”
